Dyslexia Diagnostic Assessments – Supporting Individuals with Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD)
What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a learning difference that primarily affects reading, writing, and spelling. It exists on a continuum, meaning the level of difficulty can vary for each individual.
Importantly, dyslexia does not reflect low intelligence — many people with dyslexia excel in creative, strategic and problem-solving roles.
Common Characteristics Include:
- Reading and Writing Difficulties: slow reading speed, spelling errors, or letter reversals
- Phonological Processing Challenges: difficulty recognising or processing sounds in words
- Impact on Other Skills: may affect mathematics, comprehension, or learning new languages
- Co-occurring Conditions: may occur alongside ADHD or dyscalculia
Why a Dyslexia Diagnostic Assessment Matters
Dyslexia can be classed as a disability under the terms of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (NI). Employers and organisations should consider making reasonable adjustments to support individuals with dyslexia.
Dyslexia is not linked to intelligence – it is a specific learning difference that affects how the brain processes information. With a professional diagnosis and tailored support, individuals can overcome challenges and reach their full potential.
How Dyslexia is Diagnosed in Northern Ireland
- Comprehensive assessment, conducted by a qualified Chartered Practitioner Psychologist or Educational Psychologist
- Evaluation of skills, assessment of reading, writing, spelling, memory and cognitive processing
- Detailed recommendations, a full written report with practical strategies and advice for reasonable adjustments
A professional diagnostic assessment provides clear, conclusive information on whether you have dyslexia and how best to support your learning or work needs. This can bring significant benefits in both personal and professional life. Many people with dyslexia demonstrate exceptional creativity, innovative thinking and problem-solving skills. They often approach challenges from unique perspectives – a quality highly valued by employers.
Using a range of validated psychometric tools, the assessment identifies strengths and weaknesses, providing clear recommendations for reasonable adjustments that ensure fair and equitable selection processes.
An assessment can:
- Identify your cognitive strengths and areas for development
- Provide evidence-based recommendations for support
- Increase confidence and improve performance in the workplace
